My IRC experience....
Hi. I'm Kiera and I've just joined the HPU after a very eventful year as a Tristar 2 triathlete.
I won every one of my triathlons this year and so I qualified for the IRCs. I didnt really know what IRC meant before I went and I didnt realise what a big event it was, so I was shocked to see triathletes from all over England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
As it is the most important event of the year for us younger triathletes, why is it not called the British Triathlon Championships?! Then everyone would know what it was and what to expect.
It was a very scary but exciting experience for me especially as 5 minutes before my race I made the decision to swim in the 15 degree lake without a wetsuit as during training I had had trouble getting the wetsuit off over my rather large feet - and now I had a huge timing chip on my ankle! It turned out to be the best decision as I made up 10 places to come out of transition in the leading pack.
I didnt know what position I was in until the run section though when one of my team-mates shouted to me that I was in 2nd position!! Me - in 2nd position... I was amazed! :) I know I had been getting faster all season in all 3 disciplines, so I hoped to finish in the top 10 or top 5 if I could. and I'd had a good race so I couldnt lose out now. I gave it my all on the run section and held my position finishing with a podium place on my first ever 'British Championships'.
I would like to return to the IRCs next year, so this winter I am training hard and have been doing well at cross country races. I have so far qualified and run in my districts and county races, and won my regional cross country cup race. I will also be running in my Inter counties, Regional and the National cross country championships in the next few months.
In February I will be taking my PADI open water Scubadiving qualifications in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands which I am really looking forward to and I will let you all know how it goes.
